What We Achieved
Neera Sarmah
I am a Designer and Trainer specializing in Eco-Friendly Handicraft and Bamboo Jewelry. My expertise lies in transforming easily available local raw materials into organic artifact designs. I conduct training programs for the poorest artisans, focusing on mass production of creative and innovative designs from zero-cost resources like seeds, bamboo, grass, cane, roots, thorns, and forest and agricultural waste. My work with bamboo and cane has received worldwide acclaim from fashion designers.
My primary goal is to provide sustainable livelihoods for forest dwellers. I teach them techniques to experiment with natural resources and create unique, marketable products. These capacity-building training programs, conducted in collaboration with the Forest Department, Social Welfare Department, and Rural Development, have greatly benefited the economically disadvantaged, including the physically disabled.
I also work with NGOs and self-help groups to raise awareness among forest dwellers about the importance of environmental conservation. By promoting the use of locally available natural resources, we encourage villagers to preserve the environment and manage these resources properly. This approach not only creates livelihoods for the poor but also fosters biodiversity awareness, emphasizing that saving forests means saving our planet.
